Sergei Baltacha: The big defender stayed with Saints until late 2002, when he was released. He spent six months at Millwall before having to drop out of football for a year to overcome injury. He was last seen playing for junior side Petershill.
Gary Bowman: Left back Gary was released in the summer of 2002 and signed for Arbroath. He was there for a year before being released, and is now believed to be out of football.
Tom Brown: Tom played in half of the SPL season (and unsurprisingly managed a red card in that time) before picking up a serious injury. He returned in the summer of 2001, but picked up another injury and didn't play for Saints again. Moved to Alloa towards the end of that season before signing for Dumbarton in the summer of 2002. Spent a year there before retiring, although may still be involved in junior football.
Stephen Donnachie: Stephen was a youth player who played in one game after the league was won. He was loaned to Alloa a few years later and also had spells with Stranraer and Elgin. He is currently clubless, although could be playing in the juniors.
Colin Drew: Colin had to retire a few years after the league win and is now helping out with coaching somewhere.
Ricky Gillies: Ricky only played in a few games after signing on loan from Aberdeen, but signed permanently in the summer of 2000. He spent five years at Love Street which, combined with his earlier spell at the club, saw him rewarded with a testimonial. He was released in the summer of 2005 and went on to help Partick Thistle to promotion to the first division before moving to New Zealand.
Chris Kerr: Chris missed most of the title season after being assaulted by Ross Tokely in the opening games. He returned to the first team 18 months later and was with Saints until the summer of 2003, when he was released. Went on to play for Ayr, Albion Rovers and junior side Neilston before retiring.
Barry Lavety: Due to injury, Basher's contract wasn't renewed in the summer of 2000, something which didn't impress him too much. After spending a year out, he signed for Clydebank before joining Team Bath, the first university side to make it into the FA Cup in over 100 years. In the summer of 2003 he made a surprise return to Love Street, but he only lasted a year before being released. He signed for junior side Neilston, but left them in the summer of 2005 and seems to have retired. The undoubted highlight of his career will surely be being interviewed by Mirren Mad.
Steven McGarry: Steven was with Saints until early 2002, when he was loaned to Boston United. He returned to Love Street for a few games before the end of the season, before moving to Ross County. During that time he returned to Love Street to play for Saints in Ricky Gillies' testimonial against Celtic in 2005. He was there until January 2006, when he signed for Motherwell. A die hard Saints fan, he still goes to games when he can, including last year's Bell's Cup Final.
Paul McKnight: The late goal hero against Falkirk and Ayr in 2000, the forward never scored for Saints again. His next two years were plagued with injury and he was released in 2002. He signed for Linfield, but incredibly was brought back to Love Street a year later. More injuries followed and he left towards the end of 2003. He signed for Glenavon, who he is still with.
Barry MacLaughlin: Trigger was with Saints for two more years (sadly never getting a testimonial match) before moving to Kilmarnock in the summer of 2002. He was there for two seasons before moving to Ayr United, where he was until this summer. . During that time he returned to Love Street to play for Saints in Ricky Gillies' testimonial against Celtic in 2005. He is now playing for junior side Irvine Meadow and still goes to some Saints games.
Joe McLaughlin: Joe never played in the SPL but did coach the under 21s. He left in the summer of 2001 to take up a coaching role at Millwall, before becoming youth coach at Morton in 2004. He left there a year later and seems to be out of football.
Junior Mendes: After promising to stay when we won the league, Junior became Judas when he signed for Dunfermline and was promptly heckled on his return to Love Street. He was there for a year before going clubless for 2001/02. He returned to Saints in 2002 and scored a hat trick against Clyde, before moving to Mansfield in January 2003. He was there for 18 months before signing for Huddersfield Town. He lasted a year there before being loaned to both Northampton and Grimsby, and is currently clubless. A few clubs down south are, however, sniffing around.
Hugh Murray: Shuggy is the only one still here and is set to have a testimonial. The only blip came in the summer of 2002 when he left for more money, couldn't get it and came back. The only Saints player ever to win three national trophies.
Iain Nicolson: Iain stayed with Saints for another two years, although rarely played after a bust up with the management in January 2001. He spent a year at Ayr before signing for Alloa. He left there this summer and is currently looking for a new club. He has been linked with a move into junior football.
Jens Paeslack: The German was signed permanently in the summer of 2000 but turned out to be useless. He left in mysterious circumstances, and was later exposed as an alleged dressing room thief. Went to a club in Cyprus before doing the rounds of various minor teams in Germany.
Ryan Robinson: Ryan spent two more years at Love Street before leaving, during which time he had a loan spell at Dumbarton. Now seems to have chucked football, his most notable achievement was twice managing to be subbed after coming on as a sub himself.
Ian Ross: Ian missed most of the SPL campaign through injury but was great on his return. He left in January 2003 for Partick Thistle and was there for a couple of injury plagued years. Went on to play for Raith Rovers, Alloa and latterly Stranraer, and is once again on the look out for a new club.
Ludovic Roy: Ludo was with Saints for three more years, although was loaned to St. Johnstone during that time for a few months. The club claimed it was to save on wages, whilst others (such as me) believe there was a dressing room bust up. In his last game for Saints he made he only penalty save in his Love Street career in the final minute! Left in the summer of 2003 to try his luck down south, but ended up with Ayr United. On his return to Love Street the Saints fans started singing "Ludo, give us a wave" after he conceded a goal, which he did. The Ayr fans were furious whilst the North Bank started singing "Ludo's still a Saint"! He played in Ricky Gillies' testimonial against Celtic in 2005, and left Somerset that summer. Signed for SPL side Livingston, but it seems that they are now trying to get him off their books.
Derek Scrimgour: Derek, unfortunately, played in some of our SPL games, including a 7-1 hammering at Ibrox and a 5-0 defeat at Dundee. Was subbed after another poor performance against Dundee United and was thankfully never seen in a Saints shirt again. Left in the summer of 2002 and went on to play for Dumbarton and Queen's Park (receiving a slagging when he played against us for them). He is now playing junior football for Renfrew.
Tommy Turner: Despite being old (though not as old as Andy Millen) when we won the league, Tommy played for Saints for two more years, although not much in his last season. He was released in the summer of 2002 and spent a year at SFL newboys Gretna. He left there a year later and has played for Johnstone Burgh (his current club) and Largs in the juniors.
Scott Walker: Scott stayed for another two years before leaving in the summer of 2002. It wasn't the best of splits from the club as he ended up paying a transfer fee for his move to Dunfermline. He lasted just over a year there before returning to Saints as a trialist. It looked like he'd sign but decided to go to Alloa for six months, then Hartlepool for another six. Ended up at Brechin in 2004, helping them to the second division title that season. Is still at Glebe Park but is on the transfer list.
Mark Yardley: Yards ended up scoring six goals in the SPL, despite being constantly slated by "experts" in the media. The following year he had a few months on loan at Forfar, but still came back to Saints towards the end of the season and scored a winner against Airdrie. His final Saints goal came in September 2002 when he skinned the entire Morton defence before slotting away an extra time winner at Cappielow. He left Love Street in January 2003 for Albion Rovers, continuing to annoy the Morton fans by scoring a last minute winner for them! He was there until late 2004/early 2005 when he was kicked out for being too fat/unfit and now seems to be out of football, although he still comes to the odd Saints game.
Tom Hendrie: The manager of the title winning side, things started going downhill for Hendrie around December 2001 when we were hammered 5-1 by Falkirk at home. There were often calls for his head from then on, and he wasn't helped by saying bizarre things like "They scored five goals from five breakaways". He was eventually sacked in August 2002 after we were hammered by Caley Thistle 4-0 at home. He was out of football for over a year before returning to Alloa as manager. He was there until late 2005 when he was sacked.
John Coughlin: The assistant manager in 2000, Coughlin became caretaker manager when Hendrie was sacked in 2002. Despite poor results, he somehow got the job and lasted as until November 2003, when a 4-0 hammering at home by Caley Thistle did for him to. He was out of football for a year, before becoming assistant manager at junior side Arniston Rangers. He became Berwick manager in the summer of 2005 and almost got them promoted, only to lose in the playoffs to Alloa. He occasionally comes out moaning about how bad things were at Love Street, ignoring the fact he was useless.
So that's all the players and the management team from six years ago taken care of. I wonder how many of this year's squad will still be at Love Street in 2012? Maybe Shuggy will be the only one still here again!
