Gus On The Move?

Last updated : 26 October 2006 By Stuart Gillespie

Last season, MacPherson was linked with the manager's job at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, which was fair enough, as they were a league above us. The season before, he was linked with the job at Partick Thistle, which was a bit silly as they were below us and having a nightmare. However, that didn't seem to stop the Scottish media and it won't stop them this time either due to his success since then.

Currently,
Dunfermline and Hibs are looking for new managers (although Dunfermline will probably end up with Craig Levein). Hearts and Dundee United could dispense with their current bosses pretty soon. Will Gus take any of the jobs?

Let's start off with
Dunfermline, a job that became available last night when Jim Leishman moved upstairs. With MacPherson having played for the East End Park side before moving to Love Street, it's possible he may wish to move to one of his former clubs.

However, he'd need to be mad to. They're currently joint bottom of the SPL and he won't be able to make any player changes for another few months, whilst it's also further to travel. They're also massively in debt and have a chairman who seems to be a bit of an idiot. In short, they're worse off than Saints on and off the park and probably wouldn't be able to afford the compensation. Nothing to worry about from
Fife.

Hibs? It's possible. They've a decent squad (although haven't adequately replaced the likes of Derek Riordan and Garry O'Connor) which plays some fatnastic football. They're also on the way to clearing their debt. If a fool like John Hughes is a serious contender for the job, then surely Gus will be.

Whoever takes the job would probably have some money to spend, certainly more than us, and they wouldn't have to put up with plans to build a new stadium that keep going on and on. Personally, I can't see any reason why Gus wouldn't take it, unless he believes he has unfinished business with us.

As for Hearts and Dundee United, both jobs seem very similar. Both clubs give the impression they have a lot of money but don't really. Both have chairmen who are extremely demanding and seem to have a revolving door fitted to the manager's office (Hearts more than United). Frankly, anyone would be mad to take either job - especially with the fact Dundee United are also bottom of the SPL.

As for the other teams in the SPL, the only realistic threat of Gus leaving would be if the Kilmarnock job came up due to the time he spent there as a player.
Aberdeen is also a possibility but there would be extra travelling. Everyone else is in a similar - or worse - state to ourselves.

I hoped to prove in this piece why Gus will be staying with us for a long time, but the fact is I can't even find a reason why he should stay with us other Hibs. Let's hope he can!
