With the exception of a few cup wins, thanks to extra time and penalties, we have managed just one win away to Ross County since they were admitted to the Scottish Football League. That came in 2001, a week after our only ever win away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Stewart Kean's goal on Tuesday night ended that little stat, but in the process it created another curse for the conspiracy theoriests among us.
At the start of the season Mixu Paatelainen was in good form, amassing five goals by late September. He didn't score for the next few games, but picked up a serious injury against Ross County in mid October which has effectively ended his season.
Tuesday night saw Kean notch his fifth Saints goal of the season, and half an hour later he was off with a serious injury, though it seems it's not as bad as first reckoned. Is it some sort of bizarre curse for Saints strikers on the five goal mark when we face County this season? Maybe not, as John O'Neill scored his fifth of the season in the same game Mixu was injured. Maybe it only works if you start, or are actually a striker and not a midfielder.
The other curse which reappeared on Tuesday night is a little more spooky. Before the Ross County game, Saints had managed three away wins this season, against Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle and Ayr United. About a month after the wins over Raith and Partick, their managers were history. Ayr's manager Mark Shanks resigned on Tuesday, almost exactly a month after our cup win against them.
