The magazine, which costs £1, was recently et up by four journalism students who all support different clubs. It would have been easy for them to go down the route of focussing their attentions on the Old Firm and making the odd token reference to the other 40 clubs, but if anything it's the other way round. There's detailed reviews of each of the leagues, interviews with a number of characters from across the game (the March issue had articles with Jimmy Nicholl and Terry Christie) and a number of good opinion pieces - including one giving the ridiculous SPL 2 idea the kicking that is long overdue.
A potential problem with a monthly publication is trying to keep things current - stuff that may seem up to date at the start of the month will be well out of date by the end. Fortunately, the team seem to have solved that problem. While there are previews of the Scottish Cup games at the start of March, there's also an in-depth look at Scotland's World Cup qualifiers that end the month, with the likes of a League Cup final preview thrown in for good measure.
The online medium suits the magazine - for such a publication to be financially viable in the printed form, especially in the current economic climate, would be just about impossible. However, there are hardly any costs involved with the web, meaning the cover price can also be kept down as well.
I did have a couple of complaints. The layout is pretty basic, but I'm not really after moody/arty shots of Terry Christie and his duffel coat so I wasn't too concerned about that. My main bugbear was the lack of proofreading. I'll freely admit Mirren Mad is hardly perfect, but some of the errors that had slipped through the net were particularly poor.
Overall though, it's a great magazine that's long overdue. At just a quid you don't really have anything to lose by buying a copy, so head on over to http://www.theawayend.net/ to order your issue now. The March one is pretty dated, but the April edition should be out shortly.
