Internet rumours in recent days have suggested an announcement on both a manager and a takeover is pretty close and could be made in the next week, so that part of what Spence says may well be true. However, talk of Balmer getting the job is rather worrying.
The former Wigan and Oldham player was part of Gus MacPherson's backroom team, so is hardly the "change of direction" the board were talking of when Gus was sacked and his appointment smacks of being the cheap option. He has no managerial experience and was even issued with a redundancy notice the other week. The only thing in his favour is he'll have links down south.
Other names mentioned by Spence - who really seemed to be pushing the idea Balmer is the favourite and is on a three man shortlist - included Alex Rae, Billy Stark, Derek Adams and Tommy Wilson. No mention of Celtic coach Willie McStay, who seems to be the favourite for the job among the internet Buddies.
