Barron can play anywhere along the backline and played just about every game last season, often at leftback. His form was superb during much of the campaign and he earned a number of player of the year prizes. He's still only 22 and getting him on a longer contract makes sense - we don't want to lose him for nothing or very little, which happened last summer with Stephen McGinn.
However, Barron hasn't yet signed the deal and it's odd the club has publicised the fact he's been offered a contract. Usually, the first we hear of contract extensions is when they are signed, not when they are offered. The obvious exception is the end of the season when contracts are expiring and a club makes public who they are trying to keep.
It makes you wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps Barron has already indicated he is leaving, but by showing they are trying to keep him it will make it look like less of a disaster if he turns down the offer and the board decide to cash in on him now.
