The pair left Saints in the summer of 1999 for recently relegated Blackburn. They were signed by Brian Kidd for a combined fee of £600,000, with more on appearances. Sadly for Saints Kidd was sacked by Christmas, and they only have one appearance between them; O'Brien coming off the bench in the League Cup. Sadly this wasn't enough as to gain Saints money they had to start a league game. Despite being stuck in the reserves Burton has made a few appearances in the Scotland under 21 squad, and is a reserve in the squad for tonight's ggame against Denmark.
By signing for Livingston they'll create a shock as they'll be a Scottish player who has been signed by Livvy, wee while since thats happened! They'll also link up with former Saints boss Tony Fitzpatrick who is something to do with Livvy's youth scheme, who said a few weeks ago he recommended them for Livvy to sign. This can not be true considering Fitzpatrick gave O'Brien about 5 appearances during his time in charge! When Tom Hendrie came in he started playing Burton right away and within two months was on his way down south with McNamee.
The Herald reports today that, after the pair recently being at Almondvale to agree terms, all that is left to negotiate is a transfer fee with Blackburn (something that is usually done first in deals). As the pair are under contract until 2005 there is a possiblity Blackburn will want a fair bit, and we could be entitled to a sell on fee. Either we Mirren Mad would like to wish them all the best for the future.
Meanwhile, today's Daily Record reports that former Saints player Andy Roddie is set to sign for Peterhead. Roddie played for Saints in the 1997-98 season and was meant to have given up football last season. The winger played as a trialist against Morton last Saturday and scored one, set one up and got sent off! Only one better than Ricky Gillies :-)
