Board call for volunteers

Last updated : 14 September 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

One of the aims of 10000Hours had been to tap into the skills that Saints fans had in a bid to improve things at the club. While the board have rejected the community interest company's bid, it seems they liked that part of their idea.

As a result they are looking for people with any suggestions for how things could be done differently and also for those supporters who want to offer their services to come forward. There will then be a "council" set up below board level to oversee this side of things. Anyone interested should e-mail council@saintmirren.net

I must admit part of me is a bit uneasy about calling for volunteers to do things that should be the roles of a paid employee. I appreciate money is tight but we are an SPL club and should perhaps be making things a bit more professional by having staff in full or part time roles. Having more than one employee in the commercial department would be a good start. Having said that if we really are completely skint then bringing people in to do it for free is better than nothing, although it would be nice if they were compensated for their efforts.

News of this "council" being created was revealed in a lengthy statement that you can read http://www.saintmirren.net/pages/?p=15629 I'm not going to reproduce it but there are some interesting points.

The board say the 10000Hours bid was rejected because while they like the idea of fan ownership they didn't feel this was the right model. Why it took them two years to realise this is anyone's guess.

There's also going to be some building work done at the ground soon. A roof is going to be put over the five-a-side pitches behind the away end, while the board also plan to look into developing the "void" - the part of the main stand 10000Hours wanted to turn into a members' bar.
