O'Brien's departure for Livingston has looked likely for a few months, as his contract was up in the summer. He was meant to move to Hearts, however they stupidly offered him a trial which he declined. Now he has another chance at English football, let's hope it's better than his last.
In 1999 he left Love Street, along with David McNamee, for Blackburn Rovers. Rovers had just been relegated to the first division and shortly afterwards replaced manager Brian Kidd with Graham Souness.
Souness is not renowned for using Scottish players and so it proved. The pair never played a league match for the Ewood Park side, something that would have seen Saints earn some extra money due to the terms of the transfer deal. O'Brien did make a few appearances for the first team in the league cup, but that was as close as he got.
In 2002 the pair returned to Scotland when they signed for Livingston and have been in great form ever since, constantly being linked with moves away. McNamee recently signed a new contract, despite being linked with a move away, and now the pair have finally split up.
