Hegarty is mainly a left winger, a position Saints boss Danny Lennon is keen to strengthen after offering similar trial spells to Greg Cameron, Kevin McLeod and Gordon Gilbert in the last few weeks. He only played six times for Grimsby last season as they were relegated from the football league and he's also had loan spells with the likes of York City and Whitby Town.
Apparently Hegarty, who can also operate as a wngback if required, played in yesterday's bounce game victory over Kilmarnock and did well. Gilbert was also due to play in that game although there is no indication as to how he did.
Meanwhile, it looks like Lennon's attempts to sign freed Aberdeen midfielder Stuart Duff may profe unsuccessful.
