The teenager has been in outstanding form for the last few months and this is not the first time Burnley have been linked with him. However, it is the first time a figure has been mentioned - and I have to say it's rather on the low side.
McLean has been capped for Scotland's under-21 side and is tipped to make it into the full side some day. He has been terrific since getting a starting role this season, scoring three goals and making some terrific passes, was named player of the month and is under contract until the summer of 2014. We are in a good financial position and there is absolutely no need to sell.
It's two years since we last got a decent transfer fee for someone, Stephen McGinn joining Watford in January 2010. That was a totally different scenario as his contract was expiring at the end of the season, there was no sign of him agreeing a new one and we could have done with the cash - hence we took the £100,000 or so we were offered and ran.
The worry is that £350,000 will be enough to force Saints' hand, however manager Danny Lennon said just last week: “We’ll always be a selling club if the price is right but we have no debt and we’re in no rush to sell.” Hopefully that means we wouldn't take the first offer.
There is no doubt McLean could cut it in the Championship - if he bulks up a bit - and we should be looking to get the best possible deal for him. Three years ago Burnley signed Kevin MacDonald from Dundee for £500,000 and he hadn't played any SPL football. I'd be disappointed if we accepted anything less than that - and we should throw in a sell on fee for good measure.
