Smith has made the last few Scotland squads - being capped once - so his inclusion is no real surprise. He will fly out to Portugal in a few weeks time to take part in an international tournament invovling Scotland, Portugal, the Ukraine and Sweden. Smudger turns 22 in March so the chances are this could be one of the last squads he makes. With Hearts' Jamie MacDonald the only other keeper in the squad, he has a good chance of playing.
The contract extension is a bit of a surprise. He was already signed up until the summer of 2009 and there are surely more pressing contracts to get extended. There have been rumours in the past few days that Hibs - who are now managed by Mixu Paatelainen, coach of the Saints under 19 squad when Smith played for them - were interested in acquiring his services, which is perhaps the reason for the new deal.
