The former Cowdenbeath gaffer's existing contract had been due to expire in the summer and the board have acted swiftly to get him tied down after rumoured interest from Hibs. After a disappointing first season with the club last year, Lennon and his side have really progressed in the last few months and sit fifth in the SPL - although the less said about the League Cup this season the better.
The news of Danny staying put has been greeted with optimism by most Saints fans but I still wonder if we've acted a touch soon. Yes, we're doing very well in the league - but things are so tight that could all go wrong in a few games. I'd have waited until January to give out a contract, but one bonus of getting things sorted now is we can start tying down some of the players we have out of contract in the summer. This could see the likes of Jim Goodwin, Nigel Hasselbaink and Jeroen Tesselaar offered new deals in the summer in a bid to stop them signing pre-contract agreements in January.
You have to admit Lennon or his agent has played a blinder on this one. About a month ago Lennon said he'd like a new deal but talks hadn't started. Then he went to a Hibs under-19 match at Easter Road, knowing his ties with the club would see him linked with the vacant manager's job. Within 10 days he has a new deal. Well played Danny/Danny's agent!
