Derby date in the cup

Last updated : 02 August 2011 By Stuart Gillespie

Although the sides have met in the pre-season Renfrewshire Cup Final for many years, regular readers of Mirren Mad will know I consider that little more than a friendly. However, a second round League Cup meeting at Cappielow is very much a proper game and I'm gutted I will miss it due to work committments.

Since we won the first division way back in 2000 we haven't been in the same league as Morton and there have only been two cup meetings between the sides since then. One was at Cappielow in 2002 when Saints came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in extra-time thanks to a superb goal from regular Morton slayer Mark Yardley. The other was the final Renfrewshire Derby at Love Street in 2005, Saints triumphing in a penalty shoot out to book their place in the League Challenge Cup Final - which they won.

A proper derby meeting is therefore long overdue and this one should be a cracker. The tie will be played at Cappielow on either Tuesday, August 23 or Wednesday, August 24. Bring it on!
