Doig on trial as Mehmet goes down under

Doig and another trialist - believed to be former Telstar defender Ilias Haddad - have been training with Saints recently as Danny Lennon looks for a replacement for the injured Darren McGregor. The pair are believed to have played in yesterday's bounce game against Hamilton, which Saints won 4-3.

Doig started his career with Queen of the South before going on to play for Nottingham Forest and Northampton Town. The 30-year-old then went to Aussie outfit Central Coast Mariners and has most recently been seen at Indonesian side Pelita Jaya. His identity was unvilved by BBC Scotland producer Douglas McNeil last night - who also says it's unlikely the defender will sign.

Another player looking for a contract is striker Billy Mehmet, who is now on trial with New Zealand side Wellington Phoenix. Mehmet left Paisley last year and had an unsuccessful spell in Turkey. He was due to sign for Hearts before Jim Jefferies was sacked and is now trying his luck down under.
