Both Wilson - a Scottish Cup winner with Saints as a player in 1987 who works with Rangers and the SFA - and Celtic coach McStay have been suggested as possible replacements for Gus MacPherson since he left a few weeks ago. Internet rumours about the pair have increased reecently and their experience with younger players may hint at the "change of direction" the board of directors are looking for. However, reading today's papers you get a rather mixed message - even though neither of the pair is quoted directly.
Today's Sun claims that both Saints and Kilmarnock are after McStay and are set to approach Celtic for permission, while we are also set to approach Wilson. However, the article goes on: "But SunSport understands both McStay and Wilson are happy with their Old Firm roles."
However, the Daily Record paints a different picture: "It's understood former St Mirren player Wilson would be prepared to take his first step into management and move on from the Murray Park role he has carried out for four years. McStay has returned to Celtic after a spell working as head coach of Hungarian side Ujpest FC and is also keen to land another managerial position."
Two rather contradicting views I'm sure you'll agree. Both claim that interviews will be carried out in the next few days with an appointment next week, which is odd considering chairman Stewart Gilmour is quoted in today's Paisley Daily Express saying there could be an announcement by the end of the week. It's also worth remembering there is supposedly a board meeting tomorrow.
Muddying the waters further is the Evening Times which claims it would take "an exceptional offer" for Wilson to move - but then goes on to suggest McStay and Wilson might consider it anyway. And then you have Radio Clyde, which tonight claims to have spoken to McStay who has not had an approach from either ourselves or Killie and is just focussing on his current job!
