Shuggy has spent 15 years in the Saints first team and a few more before that in the youth set-up. During his time at the club he's had a testimonial, picked up two first division winners medal, won the League Challenge Cup and also played in the League Cup Final.
However, it's a goal that brought survival rather than success which he will be remembered for. In May 1998, during his first season of first team football, he hit a screamer against Stirling Albion at Forthbank that earned us first division safety and very possibly kept the club in business.
Shuggy has barely featured this season after getting injured against Hamilton at the end of last season - ironically the day he broke Tony Fitzpatrick's Saints appearance record. He's still played a part - he steadied the ship when he came on against Rangers on Christmas Eve - but as the weeks and games past without much action or the offer of a new contract the more inevitable his departure became.
It will be a shame to see him go and someone else will have to fill the number seven shirt next season, however it is probably the right move. It would have been wrong to ditch him last year just after he'd got injured, but this season we have managed to show that we can cope without him. Whenever he got injured or suspended before we struggled and there was a collective "That's what we've been missing" from the support when he flew into the first tackle of his first game back.
We have five games left, three of them at home, so hopefully Shuggy can get a run out in some of them. The final home game against Inverness Caley Thistle on May 5 would appear the ideal time to give him a send off.
And in that hope, Mirren Mad will have a fuller look back on Shuggy's Saints career in the run up to that game.
