According to today's papers, St. Johnstone are ready to offer a nominal fee for Gallacher and the St. Mirren board are seriously considering the possibility of letting him leave. It seems they think we have no real need for three goalkeepers - we also have Mark Howard and Chris Smith - and may let him move.
This is madness for so many reasons. We may have three keepers, but Gallacher is the best of them. He was one of our best players last season and made some good saves. Letting him go for a small fee to one of our direct rivals makes absolutely no sense and sends out the wrong message to our current players, future signings and the supporters - especially those being asked to buy season tickets to fund future signings!
There's also the small matter of players being sold before a new manager is brought in. Players who are out of contract can choose to leave and there's nothing we can do about it. However, unless we get a stupidly big offer for someone, we shouldn't be selling off key players.
St. Johnstone boss Derek McInnes tried to sign Gallacher last summer and it's interesting to note he declined to comment on the speculation today. If there's no truth, a manager will usually flatly deny rumours like this.
