The story appears in today's PDE after it was revealed Saints average attendance for last season was under the 3000 mark, a quarter down on last season.
Gilmour said: "I'm not surprised the fans deserted Love Street in droves last season. Given the mince our players produced, it's no surprise the fans turned their backs on the club. The drop in fans paying to watch us certainly hurt us but, through good housekeeping we have broken even over the season. However, we are sure things will look up in the new season. Certainly, not having visits from Partick Thistle, Airdrie and Morton hurt our home gates, but the size of the drop indicates the absence of these traditionally large away followings weren't the sole reason for the drop in attendances. It's quite clear a lot of our fans gave up on watching the inadequate football which was on view from St Mirren and that's something with which I can sympathise - we were bad."
I'm sure our former players like Chris Kerr, Paul Rudden and Jamie McGowan will be delighted with our chairman's comments!
