Being only sixteen at the time I couldn't join in (not that it would have mattered as now I'm 21 I don't drink), but it is still the greatest day of my life (perhaps I have led a sheltered existence).
Saints just needed to match Dunfermline Athletic's result that day, as we were five points clear with two games to go. The nerves were evident during the first half and Raith could have been a couple up at the break.
Then Saints boss Tom Hendrie must have taken the paint off the dressing room walls with his half time team talk because less than fifteen minutes into the second half the trophy was ours.
First, Mark Yardley punced on a loose ball and thrashed it past Raith keeper Guido van de Kamp, a candidate for Saints player of the season due to his strange performances against us that season.
Then, Hugh Murray just kept the ball in and produced a great cross which Steven McGarry met with one of the finest headers I've ever seen from a Saints player to double the Saints advantage. By the time he had ran over to the North Bank, Stevie had done a cartwheel and was in tears.
A few minutes later the title was ours when Barry McLaughlin powerfully headed an Ian Ross corner past van de Kamp.
Happy 5th Anniversary every Buddie. Next year sees 29th April fall on a Saturday again. Same time, same place everyone?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to watch "The Saints Are Back" and the Scotsport highlights of the game.
