Scotland, by comparison, were rubbish. Barry Ferguson was again missing in action for his country, whilst Paul Dickov did sod all. Holland scored three in each half, half the goals coming from Ruud van Nistelrooy. Scotland rarely threatened in the 90 minutes.
Once again Scotland broke all our hearts. When the third and fourth goals went in it was the closest I have been to crying over any football matter. For the third major tournament in a row, Scotland will be missing.
Berti Vogts started with a 5-0 hammering at the hands of world champions France. 18 months on, has any improvment been made? I say yes. After we just scrapped a 1-0 victory against Bosnia in 1999, me and my brother agreed that the 2002 world cup qualifiers would be a write off as so many young players would need to be blooded. It didn't happen for that campaign, but thats effectively what happened this time around. Vogts has introduced guys like McFadden and Fletcher, guys who would be no where near a Scotland squad under Brown. Yeah he's made mistakes with guys like Kevin Kyle, but there is some good work he has done. Having said that, failure to make Germany 2006 is a sackable offence.
No pub for me last night, as my digs have Channel 5. I changed into the shirt I wore on Saturday before half time, then changed back at half time. Even at 4-0 I still thought we had hoped, but switched over to Wales at 6-0. By the time I went to bed I was so out of it (and remember, I don't drink/smoke/take drugs) thanks to the result that I set my video up wrongly and had changed back into the "lucky" shirt without realising!
To make matters worse, Wales failed to qualify, meaning we'll once again be supporting whoever England play.
