The former Arsenal youngster is believed to be close to signing a two year contract, which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2011. The Englishman has played in every Saints game this season apart from the last three, when he was replaced by Chris Smith. It's the opposite of last year, when he found himself on the bench until February before featuring regularly over the remaining months.
Howard is a reasonably solid keeper - although he is prone to the odd mistake. With Smith also tied to the club for the next few years it's good to have some consistency in this key position and not have manager Gus macPherson scrambling about for a replacement in the summer.
