The Tractor Boys were linked with McLean earlier in the season, while current Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy was also supposedly interested in him while he was in charge of Wolves. This time around it is suggested the Portman Road side are getting ready to make a firm bid of around £400,000.
That will put Saints in a bit of a dilemma. Such an offer in January would almost certainly have been rejected but by the summer McLean will only have a year left on his contract and is unlikely to sign an extension. The money would therefore have to be weighed up against the risk of losing McLean for nothing next year.
The Scotland under-21 cap has struggled to force his way into the team since recovering from injury at the start of the year, but he was superb in the first half of the season and clearly has potential. It'll therefore be interesting to see what happens if and when any bid is made.
Saints boss Danny Lennon today said he knew nothing of Ipswich's interest, but did confirm he is hoping to fix up a friendly against the Championship side. It's already been suggested online such a game would be part of a transfer deal for McLean.
