Lappin's Premiership debut

Last updated : 03 January 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Normally I wouldn't bother writing about one of our former player's first appearances of the season but in playing yesterday Lappin has joined a rather elite group. While the likes of Steven Thompson and Graham Fenton have played for us after starring in England's top flight, only a few have featured there after leaving Saints.

The Premiership was formed in 1992 and by my reckoning (with some help from David Christie on the official forum) Lappin is just the sixth player to make an appearance in it having played for Saints earlier in his career. Frank McAvennie made the odd appearance for Aston Villa and Swindon, while Steve Clarke was a regular in the Chelsea side until 1997. Jamie Fullarton played - and scored - for Crystal Palace in the 1997-98 season but the Eagles were then relegated.

More recently, Chris Iwelumo played for Wolves in 2009/10 before Charlie Adam arrived with Blackpool last season, earning a big money move to Liverpool during the summer.

It's five years this month since Lappin - who came through the ranks at Love Street and was part of the 2005-06 double winning team - left for Norwich. In that time he's been relegated from the Championship to League One before helping the Canaries to back-to-back promotions. He's had to wait for a shot this season, having only featured in the League Cup before yesterday, and hopefully this is the first of many Premiership appearances for him.

Lappin's current boss is Paul Lambert, one of a few people with Saints connections to have managed in the Premiership. Billy Davies had a disastrous spell in charge of Derby and some bloke called Alex Ferguson is also in charge of some team in the English top flight....
