Having done so, he has started turning in some good performances. The loan was extneded, but Saints boss Gus MacPherson often stated he'd be back in January - and even yesterday he said Malone would be back after Dundee's game at the weekend.
Quite why we're letting him go is a mystery. He's a decent player who hasn't had much of a chance, while others have had many. Unlike most of our players, he can take set pieces and cross the ball and looked decent when he was given a game last season.
Malone is contracted until 2009, so hopefully we will be getting a reasonable bit of cash that will be used to bring in some more players in January.
Meanwhile, MacPherson has confirmed Saints have made a bid for Inverness Caledonian Thistle's John Rankin.
