McGeoch threatens to sue

Last updated : 20 March 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

McGeoch, who also claims he has been asked to resign from the board, is currently fronting a takeover bid with business partner Paul Davies. However, it emerged at the end of last week they had been using the same lawyers - Collyer Bristow - that helped Whyte take control at Ibrox.

As a result of that connection Gilmour and the sellingc onsortium decided no longer to do business with McGeoch and Gilmour gave some interviews on Saturday saying the whole thing was strange and the connection caused concern.

McGeoch wasn't best pleased at the allegation and is now considering taking Gilmour and the BBC, who broadcast one of the interviews, to court. He issued a statement and here is what has appeared in the media with some comments from myself after selected parts.

McGeoch and Davies said: "We can confirm we are speaking to solicitors about what Stewart Gilmour has said. We have also spoken to the BBC about this as they broadcast the original interview.

"We don’t know Craig Whyte, we have never ever met him so to be linked with him in that way is scurrilous in the extreme. Stewart Gilmour has also demanded my resignation from the club but I’ve done nothing wrong and I declined immediately."

Whether or not that will be good enough for the fans baying for blood and believing McGeoch intended turning us into Ibrox remains to be seen but I have to agree - there is no reason for him to resign.

"I was stunned and upset when I took that call. All I have ever wanted is what’s best for my beloved club. As we said on the weekend, we did use Collyer Bristow who are a respected firm of solicitors.

"But this ceased to be the case when they decided to no longer get involved in Scottish football after what had happened at Rangers. We now use a different firm and have done since last month."

This is interesting. The suggestion at the end of last week was that McGeoch's group had ended the relationship. His statement implies it was actually the lawyers who called it quits. Surely they should have been ditched as soon as things blew up at Ibrox?

"These people have vast experience working in football clubs at the highest level and we wanted to use their expertise. Financial stability is and always has been our aim and by using contacts in England this can help our case.

"Sadly fans of my beloved club are being denied a strong, sustainable future."

The last part of that may be true but these same fans have no idea because we know absolutely nothing about McGeoch's bid. We don't know who is involved, where the money is coming from, what their plans are or anything like that.

"We’ve still not had an acknowledgement about the offer we tabled in the first place. I believed we had agreed a deal around the table. We believe the investment will hugely benefit the club.

"We still thought the deal was going ahead. We’ve not been told anything despite contacting their selling agent on numerous occasions."

So despite Gilmour saying McGeoch wasn't going to be buying the club McGeoch is effectively saying he first heard of this through the media?

This is all getting very silly from both sides. A lot of dirty laundry is getting aired in public and it doesn't reflect well on anyone. Time for someone to rattle some heads together and get things sorted out.
