McGowan and Hasselbaink check in

McGowan was on loan at Greenhill Road last season and was a frustrating player at times, but showed real talent at others. He scored six goals during the season - all but one coming in the cups - and seemed able to link up the play between midfield and the strikers. He played in a variety of positions so could perhaps do better if he was played in the same one all the time.

The 23-year-old also spent time on loan at Morton and Hamilton during his spell at Parkhead, but never really broke into their first team. He had another year left on his contract there, but has decided to leave for first team football. A fee may have been paid, although it's likely the majority of any future transfer fee will go into the Celtic biscuit tin.

Hasselbaink - nephew of former Chelsea frontman Jimmy Floyd - has signed up for a year after ditching Accies. He can play up front and in wider areas and has a bit of pace and presence. Unfortunately, his finishing isn't very good but working with Steven Thompson should help on that front.

Hasselbaink becomes our first Dutch player since Maikel Renfurm a decade ago (and the less said about him the better) - although David van Zanten is half-Dutch! He started his career at PSV but, like McGowan, didn't break into the first team.

Saints general manager Brian Caldwell has hinted this may not be the end of the signing spree for now, with suggestions there could be at least one more new arrival later in the week.
