The former Celtic man was only on the bench for Saturday's game against Ross County due to the injury and wasn't spotted warming up with the other subs. We really struggled without him in the first half and the prospect of having to go until January - at the earliest - is not one anyone should relish.
It is believed McGowan has been having problems with his shoulder for a while but things worsened during last week's win over Hamilton. He was outstanding for us last season after turning his loan deal from Celtic into a permanent switch and we can only hope he gets better soon.
He becomes the third Saints player to be ruled out long term, with goalie Grant Adam out for the rest of the year and Darren McGregor unlikely to play again this season.
