McKimmie also added that he couldn't understand why Broadfoot was called into the Scotland B squad. The full article can be read by clicking here. It's worth noting that McKimmie calls Broadfoot a left back, which shows just how closely he's been watching Kirk in action.
Saints manager Gus MacPherson was furious at the comments and said after Saturday's game: "He ridiculed us as a club in the press this week and said Kirk was a First Division player, but I thought he was outstanding against Aberdeen. Former professionals such as Stewart should know better.
"He is trying to tell Walter Smith how to do his job, which is strange as he is someone who is not prepared to put his toe into management. He thinks he can tell someone with as much as experience as Walter how to do his job in a newspaper column. Very good."
Broadfoot took a slightly more diplomatic approach, claiming he didn't know much about McKimmie and used the criticism to fire him up.
McKimmie has refused to apologise for his comments and yesterday said: "I don't want to get involved in a debate with the lad over this. I've seen the lad play three full games now and stand by what I have said.
"The boy is entitled to his opinion as well and I've read those with interest. The fact Kirk claimed he doesn't even know who I am doesn't worry me in the slightest. I played at the top level for 20 years and believe I'm qualified to give honest opinions about what I see on the pitch."
