Liverpoo, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon are just three of the clubs who were supposedly chasing his signature so it seems a bit of a surprise that he has plumped for a team who will be playing in the English Championship next season (no disrespect to Hull City). McPhee returns to England for £220,000, another surprise considering Beira Mar's chairman had wanted far more for him if he was to leave.
Steven was on loan at Saints from Coventry City at the end of our SPL season and was fantastic, despite not scoring. He had bags of pace and energy and won the SPL Young Player of the Month award for April. The club thought they had agreed a deal with him to stay at Saints for the following season but, so the story goes, his girlfriend changed his mind and he signed for Port Vale.
He spent three seasons there, picking up a Scotland under 21 cap, and scored 27 goals last season. He left for Portugal in the summer, despite interest from Leeds United and Bristol City, but has decided to return to England after just a year.
Good luck Steve, maybe if you get scoring again we'll soon be seeing you playing for Scotland.
