The midfielder initially joined on a six month loan in August, having also spent the second half of last season in Paisley - famously scoring the winner in the League Cup Final. Since returning he's scored three goals and done well even though he's been used on the right of midfield rather than through the middle.
Newton's loan deal was due to extend next week but Saints and Newcastle have agreed he can stay until the summer, when his contract with the English side is due to expire.
This is a real boost as there was a chance he'd leave and try his luck on loan down south. Newton staying and Paul McGowan avoiding jail yesterday means our midfield options suddenly aren't as bleak as they could have been.
