The Mantova game was arranged as an end to Saints' training camp in Lake Garda and would have provided a reasonable workout for the players. It would also have given Saints boss Gus MacPherson the chance to look at two trialists currently with the squad - a 3-0 defeat does not bode well for the one that's supposedly a defender!
A Saints XI took part in Neilston's tournament, along with an Irvine Meadow side full of ex Saints and Beith juniors. Saints made it through to the final after beating Neilston 3-2 yesterday, with Craig Molloy and Ryan McCay (both surprisingly not with the squad in Italy) scoring, along with youngster Mark McLellan. Today sadly saw a win for Irvine Meadow, with Shaun Burns' strike not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat. Fingers crossed Brian McGinty didn't score for Meadow!
