Rangers' secretary goes behind the scenes

The man in question is Gary Withey, a lawyer with Collyer Bristow - who helped Craig Whyte buy Rangers. Before our game with St Johnstone it emerged that Withey had been involved with current Saints director Ken McGeoch's bid to buy a controlling share in the club - but the services of Collyer Bristow had since been dispensed with.

It has now been revealed that last November Withey was allowed to examine every single Saints player's contract before quizing general manager Brian Caldwell on how the club was being run. Caldwell didn't know who Withey was, aside from him being a laywer, and wasn't told at any time.

Last week I made a case for Withey's involvement amid hystery McGeoch was trying to turn us into Rangers. There's a fair chance that few lawyers are up to speed on how to buy a football club so when you hire one there's a fair chance he'll have helped with a previous takeover. There's no need to panic.

However, this is a different state of affairs. To allow an official from another club - be it Rangers, Celtic, Morton or East Stirling - look at contracts and find out how the club works is unacceptable. It is a clear conflict of interest and it'll be interesting what happens next. Remember, McGeoch has already been asked to resign from the board.

As an aside, Collymore Bristow have no idea where Withey has gone and have effectively said his role at Rangers was something he did in his own time.
