Since then, Brewster has been linked with the Dunfermline and Raith Rovers jobs, whilst refusing to rule out a return to being a player, rather than a player manager. Brewster is a friend of Saints boss Gus MacPherson from the pair's time together at Dunfermline, meaning a short-term deal could be signed, whilst Partick Thistle are also rumoured to be interested in him.
Brewster hasn't played much football in 2006 due to injury and the fact United weren't very good. However, Saints are struggling to score goals at the moment and are also looking for an experienced striker. If Brewster were to be signed, the club would need to find a way around the transfer rules as Brewster was sacked whilst the window was closed.
If everything was sorted out in time, the striker - who has also played for Raith Rovers, Hibs, Greek side Ionikis and Caley Thistle as player/manager - could make his debut against his former club at Tannadice on Sunday.
