The 37-year-old has also played for Dundee, Falkirk and Morton and will fill the role vacated by Craig Hinchcliffe when he moved to Partick Thistle.
Mathers will help coach the likes of Chris Smith and Danny McColgan. Another goalkeeper is expected to be signed during the summer.
