Lennon had been hopeful of landing Campbell, who is highly rated by the Magpies' coaching staff, on loan until the end of the year and had spent some time pursuing the forward. However, the length of the deal was rumoured to be a stumbling block, which may explain why he's only joined Carlisle for a month.
It's a huge blow to Saints as it had looked as if Campbell was the only target as Lennon looked to boost his striking options, which are pretty limited at the moment. He claimed yesterday he had been talking to a player in a similar mould to Steven Thompson so hopefully something develops soon on that front.
The worrying thing is there aren't exactly a huge number of decent strikers around. Names such as Craig Beattie, Colin Nish, Rory Boulding and Andrew Barrowman have been mentioned as they are all looking for new clubs, but none of them really set the heather alight last season.
