Saints target trio

Last updated : 31 May 2011 By Stuart Gillespie

Reports in today's papers suggest Saints are chasing all three, although there is nothing more substantial than that to back up the stories. Irvine started of his career at Celtic and moved to St Johnstone before heading for Dundee last year. Curiously, he is a rightback - not exactly a position we need to strengthen as we have David van Zanten and David Barron for that role, while a few other folk can play there. Inverness Caley Thistle are also rumoured to be chasing him.

Hughes started off at Rangers and played for the likes of Leicester and Motherwell before ending up at Carrow Road. He is still under contract for another year, however with the Canaries now in the Premiership he is unlikely to get a game - he was punted out on loan to MK Dons last season. He'd probably want a reasonable amount of cash and Aberdeen and Motherwell supposedly want him too.

Paterson is perhaps a bit more realistic. He played for both Dundee United and Motherwell before going down south, but has now been let go by Plymouth. He can play left midfield or leftback and would be a decent addition to the squad.

With this being the last day in May, there is likely to be a wee bit more transfer activity in the next few days as contracts begin to expire. There are suggestions there could be as many as three new Saints signings later this week, with Steven Thompson, Paul McGowan and Derek Young rumoured to be the men in question. Let's hope the inclusion of the latter is a mistake.
