Saints v Queen's Park Preview

Last updated : 01 August 2003 By Stuart Gillespie
Last season Saints beat East Stirlingshire in the first round of this competition, and they went on to be the worst team in Scotland, finishing bottom of the third division. Queen's Park will be hoping the same fate doesn't happen to them should we beat them as well, but there is one reason why I see it hard for Queen's to avoid being bottom of division 3 come May. The reason? Derek Scrimgour.

Yes folks, the former Saints goalie is back at Love Street to face us for the first time since his departure last summer. Scrimmy is who most fans will say is the worst Saints goalie of the last 20 years or so, with the possible exceptions of Gordon Marshall and Scott Strang. Mind you, they only had one game, Scrimgour had loads and, one superb performance at Cappielow aside, was absolute mince. Some ex Saints come back to haunt us and put in fine performances against us, however I don't think Scrimmy falls in to that category. If our strikers get their shooting boots on we could score loads.

Sadly it looks like Paul McKnight and Brian McGinty up front together. Nothing against these two guys, but they seem to have extremely similar styles of play and don't get into the box enough, instead helping out in the build up play. One up front beside Barry Lavety and Eddie Annand would be fine, but sadly both of those two are injured. McGinty and mcKnight did score a fair amount in some of the Rangers youth and reserve teams, so here's hoping they repeat that this season.

Lavety and Annand are not the only absentees through injury. David Jack, Kevin Twaddle, Mark Dempsie and Fugh Murray are also injured. For all of the other players, with the exceptions of Kirk Broadfoot, Ricky Gillies, Simon Lappin, Brian McGinty and the players starting their second spell at Saints, it'll be their competitive debuts. John O'Neill should be fit enough to start after recovering from injury, which is great news.

Saints should win this game, and it would give us a great boost. Anything over than victory is unacceptable, so go for it!
