In previous years matches have taken place between two transfer XI's, one made up of British players, another of foreignors. This match today is a closed door game, unless you are a manager or a scout in which case you'll be allowed in to see if anyone is worth signing.
Today's paper mentions the players who should be making an appearance at some stage for the Transfer Window XI. They are: Davie Farrell, David van Zanten, Reggie Satha, Pepe Deakhatu, Benoit Lang, John Cassells, Chris Law, Andrew Allison, Stuart Gemmel (a former Saints youth player), Darryl Donnelly, Colin Waldie, Steve McCormick, Ally McMillan, Barry Foye, David Dodds, Ross Murdoch and Nicholas Sullivan. Heard of then? Nope, neither have I!
Notable ones seem to be David van Zanten, who is an Irish youth cap with a not very Irish name, Pepe Deakhatu, who is in line for a call up to Senegal's under 21 squad, amd Benoit Lang, a striker who has 35 caps for Luxemburg.
As well as facing a team of trialists, Saints themselves will have 8 on the field at some point today. These could include the likes of former York City defender James Okoli, former Motherwell player, Stevie Nicholas, former Doncaster Rovers player Gareth Gwynn and French defender Harry Vinh-Long Willemin. The trialists will all find out whether they are being kept on or not by Monday at the latest. There were also be a few of the Saints youngsters, such as David McKenna, on show and probably some of the new faces like Robert Dunn.
It should be an interesting game, and Saints should win it. It could even produce a few signings for us, either from Saints own trialists or the opposition.
