The 28-year-old has also played for Kilmarnock but has failed to establish himself as number one at any of his three permanent clubs. The Saintees released him last month and he has now joined the real Saints for 12 months - which will become two years if he plays enough games.
He'll battle it out for the number one shirt with Craig Samson, the pair having both been youth players at Rugby Park. I don't really know a great deal about Smith, but I'm not convinced he was the best available replacement for Gallacher. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong.
And on that subject, Paul returned to Dunfermline this morning after two years at Saints. The keeper moved to Paisley in 2009 and had a great first season, but his performances slipped last year. He was offered a new deal and initially said he wanted to stay, but it seems the Pars trumped his offer.
Personally, I feel Gallacher will be a major loss and ust admit to having a few nerves about our current goalkeeping situation.
