Considering how long it has taken, it seemed obvious that he wasn't going to sign. What is perhaps slightly disappointing is that Sutton and his agent, and to a lesser extent Saints boss Gus MacPherson, have effectively known as much for some time.
It seems Sutton wanted a two year deal last summer, but didn't get it. In January, his agent said it was unlikely he'd be staying. An offer was made towards the end of the season and it has taken over a month for a rejection to be made, during which we've had various claims about contract lengths and Sutton's other options.
He will apparently sign for an English club next week and claims he is moving for footballing reasons. Morton laughably made him an offer this week, which unsurprisingly he rejected.
Sutton was signed from Millwall at the end of August 2005 and was a vital part of the title winning side. The younger brother of former Celtic star Chris also scored the winner in the Bell's Cup Final. Last season he scored 13 goals, including two in the Miracle in Motherwell.
The other man who scored that day, Billy Mehmet, has still not signed his new deal but there has apparently been a development on that front and he could sign soon.
Meanwhile, there are rumours continuing to link Saints with former Inverness Caley Thistle striker Craig Dargo, with one message board claiming he will sign tomorrow. However, he wants lots of money, and we couldn't offer Sutton that, so I'd be surprised if he signed.
