Last night's Evening Times listed John Coughlin (obviously), former St. Johnstone boss Sandy Clark, former Saints goalie and former Stranraer boss Campbell Money, former Saints player and current Queen's Park boss John McCormack, and Queen of the South boss John Connolly. The Herald lists Money and McCormack, whilst The Scotsman also adds former Raith Rovers and Dundee boss Jocky Scott, and former Saints boss Jimmy Bone to the list, whilst the PDE says former Saint and current Forfar manager Neil Cooper, and also former Saint and current Dumbarton manager David Winnie, could also be in the frame.
Only two in that list surprise me: Connolly and Bone. Connolly currently has a good job at ths econd division champs, but may be after a step up to full time management. Ironicaly it was his teams defeat of Saints at Love Street which could have spelt Hendrie's end, combined with Saturday's defeat to Inverness Caley. Bone had a previous spell with Saints just after they'd been relegated from the Premier Division, and after almost getting Saints promoted in the first season, the only other notable thing he did was to take Saints to the LEague Challenge Cup final. Bone is one of the few people I wouldn't want in charge at Love Street, the others I can think of being Alex Totten, Tony Fitzpatrick, David Hay and, obviously, Tom Hendrie. I'm not too keen on Sandy Clark either.
Between them, Money and McCormack have basically won all three divisions in the SFL. Campbell took Stranrer to second division success in 1997-98, whilst John McCormack had Dundee miles clear at the top of the first division in the same season, only to be sacked and replaced with Jocky Scott. In the year Saints won the title, McCormack also win the third division with current side Queen's Park. Jocky Scott finished McCormack's work at Dundee, and did a decent job in the SPL with them, before being replaced with Ivano Bonetti. John Connolly won the second division last year, whilst David Winnie has only recently taken over at Dumbarton. Neil Cooper has done well with Forfar, saving them from almost certain relegation one season and almost winning promotion the next.
Now on for some pure speculation about who might be interested in the job. Kenny McDowell won the under 21 league with Celtic last season, and he could see this as the perfect step into proper management. Both of these are former Saints, as is Rowan Alexander who is currently manager of league newboys Gretna, who have started their SFL campaign well. Other players I'm only mentioning due to the fact they played for Saints are Gunni Torfasson, who was a manager in his native Iceland, John Hewitt, who has been a manager before, and Billy Davies, although he is unlikely to leave his job as assistant manager at Preston North End. Former players currently doing nothing whose names have been mentioned are Norrie McWhirter and Tommy Turner, whilst there are even rumours Mark Yardley could get the job.
Out of that lot I'd be happy with Campbell Money, Kenny McDowell or John McCormack. I'll wait until after a few games before giving an opinion on John Coughlin. The last time, after Mark Hateley decided the job wasn't for him, we all thought it would go to Campbell Money. As we all know, it didn't, it went to a total outsider with no previous links with Saints, possibly something which was needed at the time. It could be the same again, we'll just have to wait and see.
