The 32-year-old, who has also played for Dundee United, Rangers and Cardiff City, has been linked with a move to Saints for the last few months. He was even linked with a move in January and there have been rumours about him ever since we were promoted. The reason? Simple - he's a St Mirren fan from Houston.
Thompson has today revealed that a few clubs were interested in him after it was clear he was leaving Burnley, but once he knew of the Buddies' interest there was only one place he was headed. He now gets the chance to live out his boyhood dream - and the dreams of most of us.
Thompson's scoring record is far from great - his most prolific seasons were in 2002/03, when he scored a total of 12 goals for Dundee United, Rangers and Scotland, and in 2008/09 when he scored the same number for Burnley during their promotion campaign. It is, however, worth noting he did manage four goals in six games the following season - when he was in the Premiership!
Thompson's arrival is a major coup for the club and seems to have given everyone a real boost. Hopefully, him signing will convince a few other players to do likewise. There are suggestions there will be at least one more new arrival this week, with Paul McGowan, Derek Young (please God, no), Brian McLean and Hamilton's Nigel Hasselbaink among the names being mentioned.
