Time For Some Idle Speculation

None of this is based in fact. It is merely an educated guess about what could happen in the coming weeks. If it does then remember where you heard it here first, but chances are it's a case of me adding two and two together and getting an answer incredibly far from the number four.

The speculation surrounds a player who could be signing and one who could be leaving. The possible arrival is Coventry City's Chris Birchall. The right winger was on loan at Love Street for the first half of last season, a spell that was cut short due to his injury. His performances were a bit mixed, but Saints boss Gus MacPherson did indicate that he'd like to bring Birchall back if the opportunity arose.

Yesterday, Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman revealed Birchall was free to leave the club - although no one is quite sure if that means he can leave for nothing. This has prompted speculation on the net that he could be heading back to Paisley, with one person even claiming he's supposed to sign today. We desperately need a right winger and if we can afford Birchall he's probably the best we could get. He apparently enjoyed his time in Scotland and may see this move as a chance to kick start his career. Realistically, he'll probably go elsewhere and MacPherson probably has other options for the right wing, but you never know.

The player who could be leaving is Andy Dorman. The midfielder has been superb since arriving from New England Revolution in January and a number of clubs are supposedly monitoring his progress. Among them is Plymouth Argyle and this week their manager, Paul Sturrock, revealed that he is desperate to add an attacking midfield to his squad.

Dorman certainly fits that bill and after selling a few players in January there's a fair chance Plymouth could afford a sizeable transfer fee for him. The club have repeatedly stated Dorman is going nowhere, but we won't know how true that is until a firm offer for the player is received.

As I mentioned, no story has any basis in fact, it's just some guesswork. Time will tell if it turned out to be a fine piece of sleuthing or something even Inspector Clouseau would be embarrassed of.
