Trialist Leaves

Last updated : 26 July 2006 By Stuart Gillespie
The left back position has been causing Saints boss Gus MacPherson trouble for some time. For the last few years, Saints have played a 3-5-2 formation, but MacPherson has made no secret of his desire to switch to a back four. However, Saints haven't had a left back so this hasn't been possible.

Mark Innes was taken on trial at the start of pre-season, but got injured and couldn't be signed. The mystery Spaniard (who's first name is apparently Xavier) played over an hour last night, but did not do enough to merit being signed and the interest will go no further.

With no new signings expected before Saturday's season opener, it looks as if Saints will be sticking with a 3-5-2 or playing Alan Reid or Ryan McCay at left back.
