Thomson has seemed to struggle this season, the emergence of Kenny McLean pushing him down the pecking order for a while, and has also had a few injury problems. There have been rumours for a while that the player had planned to leave anyway to return to England but today the news has been confirmed. At least it should make things easier next season with only one Steven Thompson in the squad!
The 34-year-old joined Saints from Brighton in January 2009 and has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for the club. He's scored 11 goals - the most recent against Kilmarnock just a few weeks ago - and featured in the 2010 League Cup Final. However, his most famous contribution came a few days later as he scored a double in the famous 4-0 win over Celtic.
All the best Thommo!
