Yardley Leaves

Mark Yardley was signed by Jimmy Bone in the mid 1990s after being Scotland's top scorer for Cowdenbeath the previous season. He made an immediate impat, starting against Hamilton Accies at Firhill and scoring inside a minute! The big man was a vital part of our title season, scoring 19 goals, and is in the top 5 of Saints post war scorers. He's also our joint top scorer against Morton with Barry Lavety.

Yards struggled when we were in the SPL, but still managed to get 5 goals. Last season he spent a period on loan at Forfar before coming back and scoring against Airdrie. This season he has managed just one goal, which turned out to be his final goal, but what a goal it was. With Saints being 2-0 down against local rivals Morton at half time, they'd got it back to 2-2 in the second half and forced extra time. In the second period, yards proceeded to skin 3 or 4 of the unwashed's defence and slot the ball cooly away for victory. It is, in my opinion, his greatest ever Saints goal, a goal which was made even sweeter as the Morton fans had been taking the mickey out of him. Considering Yards isn't the most nimble of players it was a piece of fantastic skill which some people have said was better than Archie Gemmill's goal against Holland in the 1978 world cup!

All the best Mark, good luck for the future. You'll be missed.
