There were a few trips to Blackpool in the late 1990s and early 2000s which always seemed to go down well - and it could be argued they shaped both club's seasons. In 1999 we won - we then went on to win the league while Blackpool were relegated. In 2000 we lost - that season it was us that went down and Blackpool that went up. A draw would probably be the most beneficla results for both teams tonight!
Saints still have doubts over the fitness of Will Haining, Jack Ross and Steven Robb. Of the trio, Ross is the most likely to feature tonight as he's now had his stitches removed. Haining could also return, but that would be a cruel blow for Marc McAusland who did so wel against Morton on Saturday. Given his past history, it should be no surprise that Robb is injured before the season begins. Fingers crossed this isn't a sign of things to come.
There could be a couple of trialists on display tonight, with Dominic Shimmin set to return after missing Saturday's match. The defender did well against Dumbarton and Stirling Albion last week and a good performance against the toughest opposition we'll face all summer could go a long way to resolving his future. Saints boss Gus MacPherson is also hoping to have a Spanish trialist - believed to be a uoungster from Atletico Madrid on trial tonight. The player was with Saints in Italy but his agent has yet to agree to another trial period.
Blackpool are a Championship side and should present a stern test for us tonight. They have a number of decent players and seem set to establish themselves in the league this season after just avoiding relegation last year. One of their better players is Stephen McPhee, who spent a few months on loan at Saints in 2001. Unfortunately, he could miss tonight's game through injury so Saints fans won't get a chance to see him in action for the first time in seven years - not that they'll be too bothered!
On paper Blackpool are a better side and should win this one - but most Saints fans will be too drunk to notice!
