Saints have been far from convincing in their wins over Stranraer and Queen of the South at Love Street. The two sides are battling for their lives in the first division yet caused Saints no end of problems. We were lucky to win against Stranraer, whilst last Saturday we should probably have been a few goals up before finally scoring. If we wish to win the league this season (and I assume we do) we need to be far, far more clinical in front of goal.
Craig Hinchcliffe is Saints only absentee tomorrow, although there are doubts over the fitness of Kevin McGowne and Andy Millen. Kirk Broadfoot returned from his broken foot last week (the injury having been sustained against Clyde on January 2) and had a fantastic game. If McGowne is ruled out, it looks likely he will start and if he plays the way he did last week, that's a good thing. Mark Reilly did well whilst deputising for Andy Millen and will start again if Millen is still injured.
John Sutton had a stinker last week, and missed a sitter into the bargain, and could well be replaced by Stewart Kean, who set up the winning goal. Saints are struggling in front of goal at the moment, which is frustrating considering the form of Kean and Sutton in 2005. The pair have scored just one goal from open play (plus three penalties) since we hammered Ross County in December. Mark Corcoran has scored a few, but with Brian McGinty and Billy Mehmet having spells on the sidelines, Saints have struggled whilst their front two have toiled. A return to scoring ways for one or both of them over the next few games would not go amiss.
Of course, there's no point in Saints even turning up tomorrow because Clyde are the better team. That was the view of Graham Roberts after our win over them in January. Don't let the fact we are miles ahead of them in the table, top of the league and have beaten them three times (although one was decidedly jammy), Clyde are a better side. Hmmm.
Roberts sense of injustice will no doubt lead to Clyde being all fired up for tomorrow's game, meaning there could be some tasty tackles and a cards flourished about the place. On our last visit to Broadwood, former Morton player Alex Williams scored and celebrated in the direction of the Saints support. The Saints fans ended up having the last laugh though. Former Saints midfield ghost Paul McHale has returned from injury recently, which should ensure he bags one tomorrow.
Clyde will be well fired up for this game, whilst our strikers aren't doing well. As a result, I think Clyde will win 1-0.
