Hearts v Saints Preview

Last updated : 18 April 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
Saints are currently 11th in the SPL and have a reasonable chance to make it to the heady heights of ninth before the summer. It's hardly something to get the pulses racing, but it's something worthwhile. We get about £80,000 for each place higher we finish, which would provide a handy cash sum that could hopefully be used on a few players for next season. While we'll be in good financial shape next term, any extra cash is gratefully received.

The remaining few games are far from meaningless for some Saints squad members, with many out of contract in the summer. The last few games are the last of many chances the likes of Stewart Kean, Mark Corcoran and ian Maxwell will have to impress. Despite playing a reasonable number of games this season, they haven't yet got new deals - perhaps suggesting their futures lie elsewhere. To be honest, excluding the youngsters, only Richard Brittain and Stephen O'Donnell can complain they haven't been given a fair crack of the whip due to their injury problems. O'Donnell has done well for the reserves recently and has scored at Tynecastle, so he may be given a run out tomorrow.

This game is probably the hardest we have remaining this season (apart from the match against Rangers, but god knows when it will be played). As a result, we'll probably go with a strong side and not play some of the youngsters. David van Zanten is injured and Hugh Murray is suspended, while Gary Mason is a doubt. Billy Mehmet and Chris Smith should return after the embarrassment against Gretna last week.

Once again, the focus at Hearts this week has been on off the pitch goings on, with the club holding their AGM. Roman Romanov came out with the sort of bizarre statements you'd expect from a member of his family, although his dad is still in a different league. The meeting should ensure most of the reporting of this game will deal with the behind the scenes stuff. On the pitch, Laryea Kingston can pose a threat from midfield, while the pace of Christian Nade and the strength of Calum "Billy" Elliot up front could cause our defence problems.

Hearts are in the bottom six for the first time since the wonderful split was introduced and will be wanting to make things up to their fans - especially after some of their results against us in recent years - so my prediction is a comfortable Jambos victory.
